Brief biography of Shivani Sivagurunathan
Shivani Sivagurunathan is a Malaysian fiction writer and
poet. Born in Kuala Lumpur and raised in Port Dickson, she spent eight years in
the UK where she studied comparative literature. Previously she was lecturing
in UPM but she is currently working as an Assistant Professor in Faculty of
Arts in University Nottingham. She wrote poem titled"Chiaroscuro" and
a collection of short stories titled" Wildlife on Coal Island". 'Chiaroscuro' was published in 2010 whereas 'Wildlife on Coal Island" waspublished in 2011. Her thesis for Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
was " Coolie Cartography: Crossing Frontiers Through Coolitude". This
thesis was submitted to the Centre for Translations and Comparative Cultural
Studies, University of Warwick in 2007.
Brief biography of Rani Moorthy
Rani Moorthy is a Malaysian-born playwright, actress, and
artistic director of Rasa Productions. Following the race riots of 1969 her
family tried to emigrate to Singapore, but were unsuccessful for a time. When
they eventually made it, Moorthy began her acting career, appearing in theatre
and hosting The Ra Ra Show, a television comedy. In 1996, she emigrated to the
United Kingdom.[1] Rani was educated at the 'National University of Singapore.
Rani herself grew up in a Malaysian/Tamil culture, that
adored a light skinned completion. From a very young age Rani began to learn
about the importance of living in a culture that carried a number of
stereotypes like caste and class differences. Her works are Pooja( 2002),
Manchester United and the Malay Warrior(2002), Curry Tales(2004), Too Close to
Home(2006) and Shades of Brown(2007). Her
programmes on TV are
Episode "Martial Arts" (aired 6 March 2002 on BBC
One) and Citizen Khan ( Broadcast 27 August 2012 on BBC One). Whose Sari Now
(2007) was broadcast between 1 and 5 October 2007 as part of BBC Radio 4's
Woman's Hour Drama strand.
Brief biography of Rani Manicka
Rani Manicka is an International Best selling novelist, born
and educated in Malaysia;[ She grew up in Terengganu and attended the
University of Malaysia, where she received a business degree.[2]She currently
divides her time between Malaysia and the United Kingdom. Infused with her own
Sri Lankan Tamil family history, The Rice Mother is her first novel, and it won
the Commonwealth Writers' Prize in 2003 for South East Asia and South Pacific
region. Her second novel, Touching Earth, was published in 2005 followed by The
Japanese Lover released in 2009.Her latest novel "Black Jack" was
published in 2013.
Brief biography of Yasmin Ahmad
Yasmin Ahmad (7 January 1958 – 25 July 2009) was a film
director, writer and scriptwriter from Malaysia and was also the executive
creative director at Leo Burnett Kuala Lumpur. She was a screenwriter for “The
Talent Times”. Her television commercials and films are well known in Malaysia
for their humour, heart and love that crosses cross-cultural barriers, Yasmin
was born in Kampung Bukit Treh in Muar, Johor on 7 Jan 1958. A graduate in arts
majoring in politics and psychology from Newcastle University in England,
Yasmin began her career in advertising as a copywriter at Ogilvy & Mather.
She passed away on 25 July in 2009 because of stroke and bleeding in the brain.
Brief biography of Margaret Lim Hui Lian
Sarawak-born Margaret Lim Hui Lian, who has a B.A. in
English from the University of British Columbia and a B.Ed. from Queen's,
Kingston, Ontario, is a children's book writer from Malaysia. She is the author
of the PAYAH Rain Forest adventure series. "Nonah or the Ghost of Gunung
Mulu", her most recent, has been selected by the International Board on
Books for Young People(IBBY) for their 2010 Honour List in a ceremony held in
Santiago de Compostela in Spain. Lim's essay "Portrait of a Children's
Book Author as a Young Reader" was published in the September 2010 issue
of Cha. Her piece was the inspiration for the editorial for that issue. Her

Margaret Lim taught 10th and 11th graders English Literature
in Sarawak, Malaysia, before she moved with her husband to Germany.
Margaret
Lim established Fairy Bird Children's Books in May 2005 in her home town
Kuching, Malaysia
Margaret Lim was included in the Sarawak Women's Museum,
Kuching, Malaysia, on August 6, 2007.
She was also nominated for the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Awards
(ALMA) 2008.
